SPAN – East Down

These papers form a significant output from an action research project SPAN (Strategic Planning Action Network) involving four regions within four EU member states: Northern Ireland (UK), Greater Dublin (Ireland), Wallonia (Belgium), and Champagne-Ardenne (France).  Within Northern Ireland the partnership involved the Institute of Spatial and Environmental Planning at Queens University Belfast and Rural Community Network.  In each Resource Booklet the research reported is concerned with the family and friendship relationships of local people, their connectedness with their particular part of rural Northern Ireland, their attitudes to the countryside and their perceptions of important rural planning matters. These resource booklets are designed to provide information that can facilitate dialogue by citizens on rural planning and development matters.   It is hoped that the data presented in them can move policy formation much closer towards an enduring appreciation of community preference with environmental responsibility.
