RCN - Messines & the Somme

Rural Community Network, for the very first time, organised a study visit to Messines in Belgium and the Somme in France. The participants who attended, are currently on our OCN Level 3 Course Understanding Commemoration. The four day study visit involved visits to the Battlefields including Newfoundland Memorial, 36th Ulster Division Ulster Tower, Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, 16th Irish Division Memorial at Guillemont, Vimy Ridge Canadian Memorial, the Pool of Peace at Wijtschate, Island of Ireland Peace Park, the Grave of Willy Redmond at Loker, German Cemetery at Langemark, Grave of John Condon at Poelkapelle and Tyne Cot Cemetery at Passchendaele.

The visit really complemented the learning through the OCN and evaluation feedback was outstanding. Many thanks to Craig Barr for working alongside our Community Relations Officer, Charmain Jones on this initiative and thanks to the Department of Foreign Affairs for part financing the visit through the Messines 2017 funding.
